Oakville’s Year in Review

Over this past year I have had the pleasure of serving as Oakville’s Member of Parliament. This honour is truly humbling, and over the past year we have achieved a great deal together. With the holidays upon us this time of year always gives me time to pause, reflect and celebrate our hard work and many achievements.

I am immensely proud of our Government’s commitment to promises kept including the improvement to the quality of life for seniors, the un-muzzling of government scientists, the Canadian Child Benefit as well as increasing funding for women’s shelters. As your representative in Ottawa, I have continued to work hard to ensure that Oakville’s voice is heard in our nation’s capital.

With the start of this year I engaged in pre-budget consultations with municipal, regional and provincial leaders, lead discussions with Oakville’s business and automotive industry leaders, and supported various initiatives and occasions, from World Health Day to Canada Day.

I’ve been honoured to attend community building events throughout the year and receive the opinions, ideas and input from the attendees of our Town Hall forums on climate change and electoral reform, as well as the amazing feedback received through my Have Your Say tool. I had the privilege of being a part of the Canadian Parliamentary Delegation in Slovakia where I was able to represent Oakville and Canada on the world stage where we exchanged ideas and information with our European counterparts.

Through the Canada Summer Jobs program Oakville received over $1 million in funding. This allowed the creation of 352 summer jobs which aided students in gaining valuable experience as they work towards transitioning to the labour market. I also had the pleasure to attend the Access Abilities 15th Annual Veterans Luncheon to honour those who have, and continue to serve and sacrifice for Canada.

Canada Summer Jobs

On top of these activities and accomplishments this year, Oakville organizations have been the recipients of almost $10 million in funding grants since October 2015. This funding has gone towards delivering clean technology investment to Oakville firms, supporting our youth through the Canada Summer Jobs program and expanding research at Sheridan College. Much work is still left ahead and greater investments in our community will still be made, especially in infrastructure.

As your representative in Ottawa, I always look forward to hearing your perspectives and opinions on issues that matter greatly to you. Email me at [email protected], or take advantage of the Have Your Say interactive tool on my website to tell me your thoughts on upcoming legislation. Thank you to all who have written to me already, and I look forward to hearing your thoughts and ideas on a wide variety of issues in the upcoming new year. If you are interested in staying updated on what I am doing, both in Ottawa and in Oakville, like my Facebook page, follow me on Twitter, or subscribe to my email newsletter.

As the holiday season is now upon us, it is the time to reflect on the great work we have achieved together for our community of Oakville. I look forward to working on your behalf in the new year on many more lasting achievements to come.

Sincerely yours,
John
